re-stream UDP multicast stream

Postby boardsiebob » Mon Jan 07, 2013 9:55 am

Hello and a Happy New Year!

I need to connect Unreal Live server to an UDP muticast stream coming from an encoder. The stream is encoded as h264 MPEG-TS HD quality. VLC can show it with minimal (1 sec) lag. It is used for showing Powerpoint presentation from an HDMI output of a laptop to many network connected PC's.
Can I re-stream this into Live Server?
How to configure Live server to accept the stream coming from multicast UDP address?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Bob,

What is the streaming protocol of this UDP multicast stream? Is it MPEG2-TS? If yes, you can restream it with Unreal Media Server - create a live broadcast of type "Rebroadcast RTSP / MPEG2-TS" live source.

The Live Server only works with DirectShow source filters, so if you had a filter providing this stream, the Live Server would pick it up.
But, as said before, most probably, you can do it immediately directly with Unreal Media Server.

sorry, I actually meant directly with Media Server..
The equipment the stream is coming from is Pro Video Instruments encoder with IPTV output most likely in MPEG-TS (could be multi program). When I configure UMS I type in its IP address 224.2.2.2:1234 (select RTSP://) and select UDP. However I get an error when I connect flash player. The error is in French as this version of flash is installed but it is connection problem.
Can I unselect rtsp:// ? VLC connects with udp://224.2.2.2:1234
Thanks

Of course you can!
Why are you selecting RTSP at all? It's a combo box, just select mpts:// which means MPEG2-TS.

yes, got that! However using mpts:// I receive 'Çlass not register' error in flash player.
I tried with various mpts parameters including blanks.

The Pro Video streamer has the follwing settings:
PMT PID:100 Video PID(0x): 102 Audio PID(0x): 101
PCR PID: 103 Transport Stream ID(0x): 1 IP: 224.2.2.2 Port: 1234
Program Name: CN 1 Program Number: 19 IP TTL: 128 Original Network ID (0x): 0

Can you tell me how to fill out those mpts parameters using above settings?

Thanks

What OS are you running on?
I have a feeling that you did not read our FAQ section [who did, anyway :)] that tells you that for MPEG-TS functionality you need certain Windows components that come with Windows Media Player or Windows Desktop Experience on server operating systems.

It is running on Server2008R2 with Desktop Experience enabled.
What can I fill in for those mpts parameters? I still get "Class not registered"..

Is there mpg2splt.ax file in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder on your system? If there's try running the following command:
regsvr32 C:\Windows\SysWOW64\mpg2splt.ax

Hi,
this file is not there. I checked on another R2 box and it is there. I will compare the two to see what else needs to be installed/updated.
Incidentally I ran UMS on Win7 and it takes the mpts stream: Channel ID needs set to Program Mapping Table ID (PMT ID) 0x100. Video stream # set to Video PID 0x102. To match the Pro Video streamer configuration. Stream is then viewable with UM player.

Thanks for the info. I am glad it works. Still interested if it will work on another R2 box, or you can copy this file from another R2 box to that one, register it and try again.
Unreal Media MPEG2-TS functionality depends on this system file, which, as far as we could research, should be installed and registered when you enable Desktop Experience on 2008 Server.
