On Windows Server 2008/2012/2016 you need to enable Desktop Experience.

On Windows Server 2008/2012/2016:

You may need to also install Desktop Experience decoder update

Also, try to install Windows Media Player

Hello. After upgrading to the latest version(we were already using v12 but we wanted to use the new fixes and so we re installed the app)
i'm getting unsupported encoding.
I had create a web page using the html 5 player and used to work just fine.
Now it reports the unsupported encoding error.
Using windows 2012 r2 with desktop experience installed.
Thanks!

For HTML5 player you must have H.264 (AVC1) video encoding and AAC audio encoding.
So your live broadcast must be encoded with these codecs, regardless of container format it is being received from live encoder (be it MPEG2-TS or RTSP or RTMP or UMS).
For files (I suppose you are adding a file to live playlist, as HTML5 player can only play live broadcasts), open up the Media Server Configurator, select your virtual folder and select a file you are streaming.
You will see detailed info about codecs and bitrates in this file, or you will see "format is not supported". In the latter case, you must install Desktop Experience, or Media Foundation feature for Windows 2016 server.
