hitches on live-stream

Postby jbmusic » Tue Mar 24, 2015 4:52 pm

Dear fora members,

I would like to ask you if you could help me out on a issue I am facing, which I think it's a buffer issue.
I made a setup with OBS, which uses a RTMP URL, which I connect to Unreal media server for live cam feeds
I have for instance 2 signals from outside, as well some signals from internal network
So far so good..

I use the option MPEG2_TS broadcasting, which I use to stream inside the program vMix.
The current video's (AVI file's) which I use are working fine without any hitch on the playout.
But when I use the MPEG2 file which comes including audio I notice hitches. This for video as well audio.
I have tried to raise the buffer option in vMix, but without success.

I tried internal as external live feeds, without any success.
Is there somebody wo could help me on this subject?

Some specs from the system which is broadcasting the files etc.

Dual core system, E6550, 2.33 Ghz
4.00 RAM
Win 7 ultimate SP1
video NVidia GTX 275

We are now in an experimental face, but when this issue is solved we are intending to buy the software and setup the final system and go live on this system, so any help would be appreciated!
many thanks in advance
Jan

Are you streaming this MPEG2 file from vMix to Unreal Media Server using MPEG2-TS protocol,
or from Unreal Media Server to vMix using MPEG2-TS protocol?

Anyway, files containing mpeg2-video are not recommended for streaming; it's really helpful to convert them to AVC mp4.

Thanks for your reply!
I am sending mpeg2 from media server too vMix.
What would be the best work around to play in mp4 format in combi with vMix

Convert your mpeg2-video file to AVC(h.264) mp4 file; then you can keep doing MPEG2-TS of that mp4 file from Unreal Media Server to vMix.

dear Admin,

once again thanks for your reply.
Concerning the stream which i send to the media-server fs H.264 with CBR (aprox 1000 Kbps)
So this should be okay, and there should not be any transition to mpeg2.. it's just the option Unreal Media Server using MPEG2-TS protocol
Or do i understand something wrong?

Please don't confuse mpeg2 video encoding and MPEG2-TS network protocol.

Using Unreal Media Server you can send mpeg1/mpeg2/mpeg4/h.264-encoded video and mp3/aac-encoded audio (embedded in any file container format such as .avi, .mp4, .mkv) via MPEG2-TS protocol, primarily for decoding by set-top-boxes. This also applies to live streams that have these encodings.

So if you have an h.264 video stream (live or file), you should stream it out via MPEG2-TS with no issues. See if you need to apply the following tweak for vMix,
described in our FAQ
http://umediaserver.net/umediaserver/faq.html :

"Unreal Media Server segments UDP MPEG2-TS stream into 4 IP packets constructed of 7 raw MPEG2 packets. Can it segment the stream into just 1 IP packet instead of 4?
Create DWORD registry value named MPEG2TSChunkMTUs, under HKLM\SOFTWARE\UNREAL\SERVER (or HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432NODE\UNREAL\SERVER), and set it to 1 (the valid range is 1 to 8).

Dear Admin,

you're right about the encoding and the protocol
Was my fault in the description but I use the protocol and the signal sending to the server is H.264 encoded with AAC audio

thanks for that suggestion, which I will try..

Keep you posted!

So maybe this is vMix issue?
Why are you using MPEG2-TS? Can't vMix accept RTMP stream?

I would like to connect OBS broadcaster to vMix, but this should be done true a Media server.
vMix don't has his own RTMP options which I could use to connect...
This is also done there I would like to connect outside cam's from other studios to the streaming server and your program fits perfect for that purpose (beside this issue :-) )

I use the TSudp protocol to parse the MPEG2TS protocol too vMix and this works okay, beside the hitches..
if you like I could turn on a stream so you could check
