Adding dynamic captions to stream

Is there a programmable way to add/change a caption onto a live stream without using extra hardware (character generator)?

Yes.

Take a look at the SDK, there is a "Live Annotations" plugin that allows you doing that.

Is there a way to dynamically turn this on and off? Not sure if it is a big issue but if we only send the captions at the start of a stream and then don't use them for the entire rest of stream is it a large overhead to look at every frame and do nothing?

If the impact is little is won't make much of a difference.

When selecting the Use custom video transformer and entering: LiveAnnotationsPlugin.Transform
I get the error ProgID of video transformer is not valid??

Liveannotationsplugins.dll has been registered with regsvr32. Does the liveannotationsplugins.dll need to be located in any certain directory?

It just needs to be registered. Make sure it registered successfully.

Ahh it seems i can't update an existing media source with an optional transformer. If I delete the source and add it back it will let me specify an optional video transformer.
