I have installed Unreal Media Server with great success on my Laptop (Windows XP Pro) and also enabled http proxying so that I can stream video file through a web page.
However when I set the UMS server up in a Windows 2000 Server Box, I started having problems. Service is running. Config is in default ports etc. Tho there was no issue in installation, I am unable to view the streaming media file from local server even in FTP mode! I get a error prompt 'Direct Show unable to render etc..'. when I try to view the streaming media thru the Streaming Media player (from local machine) I tried all types of files but no result. On the other hand I am able to view the same file from the streaming media player in FTP mode from another machine - which is a Windows 2000 Pro !
Because this I am unable to publish the streaming media on the Server box through http (I want to make this a server to publish media content).
Is this something to do with DirectX? Not sure of this. Did a lot of reasearch on google and this forum but could not get help!
Appreciate all help. |

I ran into this problem as well using WMV on 2000 server. what I found out is that before media player 9 the codecs for WMV are not on the server and it can not render it. I Also had this probelm when using AVI that were compiled with a non MS supported codec. basically if you can't watch the file on the server then you need to get either media player 9/10 and/or the required codecs to watch it on the server. then it can render no problem. _________________ http://www.garageaction.com

Hey great - I saw that the installed version of Media player was 5.0. I upgraded to media player 9 and it Worked ! Now I am able to see the video on the server itself.
Now another question? Does the client need to connect directly to the Media Server when using http proxy? I have a IIS on a DMZ and clients outside the firewall access it. Does the media server need to be in this m/c? I publish other content by proxying through this DMZ machine so there is no content on the DMZ m/c. |

I'm not sure about the proxy. I put mine behind firewall/routers so I just pass the port number to the media servers. the easiest setup is to just put the machine directly into the dmz and then secure up the OS by unused ports with the router and firewall. _________________ http://www.garageaction.com

I have just installed the new version and experienced almost the same symptom. I have three Win2K+SP4 DeskTops. One is used as the Server, the other two which have identical hardware are able to render the Test.avi and an animation of my own which is also a .avi file. However, although both Player PCs are installed with Windows Media Player Ver. 9 and able to play a .wmv file locally, one PC is able to render it through UnRealMedia streaming. The other gives me an error MSG; "Direct show is unable not render this media." Have you figured out what was causing your dificulty?

| Since Unreal Media Server does not transcode files this error means only one thing - you do not have decoders on the client machine to decode streamied file. Figure out what decoder you need for the file and install it on client machine. |

Thanks for the quick reply. However, you give me some hope but no real instruction. As I stated, both of my client PCs are able to render the exact .wmv file locally which seems to say that whatever "decoder" that is needed is on both of these PCs. It follows that the additional "layer" of streaming through UnRealMedia has introduced something that requires another "decoder" that one PC happens to have, but the other is lacking. So, to resolve this mystery, woundn't you say someone familiar with UnRealMdia should be able to tell based on the reported error MSG? It would be a very challenging detective work from a new user like me. Thank you very much.
