|
|
Expecting to be able to stream my mp3 collection over UMS I loaded up a folder. Of course they play fine locally, but when I try to stream them over the net, I got a buffer every 1-2 secs. Checking the properties I realized the bit rate was 174kByte/s which translates to about 1400kbit/s and obviously my DSL couldn't handle it at 512 upload.
But I downloaded a php file called kplaylist that utilizes MySQL and php to build a music database. Clicking on the music files buffers a few seconds over the internet, but seems to stream just fine to both WMP and Musicmatch. I am assuming these programs must sense the bitrates and adjust for it? It would be nice if SMP could do that. |

174kByte/s is a bitrate of uncomressed audio (.wav).
CD quality mp3 normally results in 16 kByte/s or less.
So you must have .wav files there, not mp3.
Unreal Media Server streams files "as is", without transcoding.
Other programs may transcode/compress uncompressed audio on the fly, so it fits your DSL upload.

Respectfully Admin. These are definitely mp3. If an entire song is less than 3 MBs it's an mp3. Gspot says they are mpeg and some (not many) were converted from .wav to mp3. 44100 Hz and 128kbps mp3's. Every one I play in SMP shows these properties. At first I mistook the 174kByte/s for bits, so I figured it should work okay. But after the buffering I saw that figure. I don't have issues like this streaming .wmv's. I thought mp3's would be easy.
And the fact that the kplaylist feeds seem to stream to WMP okay is puzzling. |

I'll send you an email of a link to the file playlist for the UMS. |

Admin, I checked a .wav file properties during SMP playback and it said the bitrate was the same as the mp3s, 172 to 174kBytes/s. Now this is in the lower section where it says the Audio Content - PCM. Sample rate 44.1, 2 channels. I wasn't clear about that obviously.
Above where it says current bitrate, a mp3 was reading at about 45kBytes/s and buffering every second. |

Sorry to keep bugging you Admin, but every mp3 I've tried (one's I've downloaded, made and been given) show the Media stream as PCM audio at 174KByte/s, and the current bitrate as 174 on lan or 45kByte/s on the internet based on upload speed.
But I do notice when I play the test.avi it shows the Audio stream as an mp3 (not a PCM) at 22Khz and 2 channels. Why does it say mp3 and the others PCM? Again, I am sure the files I am trying to play are mp3. |

Admin, you don't like Elvis? Ha. I assume you got the mp3 I sent you and could see the same bitrate display I did. I've tried it at 3 locations and they all show the mp3 with a wav-class bitrate in properties. And mp3 streams with 44.1khz continue to over-buffer making them unplayable over the internet. Other software doesn't have this issue with the identical files. |

| Hello admin. After receiving the file I sent a week ago were you able to see the same bitrate property results I did? I don't understand why Kplaylist streams the identical files over the internet utilizing WMP or Musicmatch as it's client and Umedia chokes. |

Admin | Sure. I've sent the file to admin@this forum and to the techsupport email address. I will send another email to techsupport with a link to the Kplaylist website. It will have mp3s that can be downloaded. All show the same bitrate as I mentioned. |
