Hi all

Just wanted to know if I can stream video from a webcam via WIFI to my computer?

I'm going to have a robot with an onboard computer with the webcam and media server (live??) stream video to my main computer.

Is this possible??

Based on my experience you can stream two 320x240 video streams with no problem using 802.11g, if you eliminate the sound on at least one of the streams you should be able to up the video size to 640x480 at 20 frames per second. and not drop too many frames. However i do not think you can run two live streams from one live server, nor do I believe but could be wrong that you can't load two live servers at the same time.

BTW has anyone seen a price list for the media server anywhere on the entire website. I need to register to eliminate the 15 user limitation, but can not find the link anywhere.

It's the bandwith that I thik concerns you? If so I have found that 128k upload is not enough for a decent video, the next i tried is 386K up and that is sufficient for a 320x200 @ 20 frames but will get a bit choppy from time to time, kinda like watching a webcam through the inet. 768K up is ideal for one video and decent audio and doesn't drop any frames at 25 frames per second. and a dedicated t-1 at 1.5mbs up/down is great for a 640x480 video at 30 frames per seconds and leaves me with plenty of room to spare.

As for Wifi- there are many "standards" available, 802.11b is more then enough to carry several vids at 640x480. and 802.11g can handle high def transmissions but all that is determined by number of viewers as well.

On oct 21st this month I'm tranmitting my first pay per view broadcast with media server. it will be going from a laptop with an 802.11g nic to a linksys 802.11g router connected to a comcast 768K up 6meg down connection. this will relay to umediaserver on dual t-1s (3.0 meg up/down) and we expect about 25 to 30 viewers to be watching.

Based on the results and feedback from the viewers will determine my hardware used for next months broadcast from the Wachovia center where we expect approximatly 3000+ viewers with the same livemedia setup but going out through a 3 terabyte connection to the internet. IF this event takes place I will be sure to post my findings on bandwith utilization and what nots to help everyone out.

There also is another form of Wifi that you might be refering to. Cell phone Wifi, I do not believe can carry a decent video yet. unless you happen to have a real expensive plan and find a real good sweet spot in thier coverage that noone else is going to use during your transmission. I did do a trial run with the wifi service available from verizon via a pci card to my laptop. to put it simply don't waste your time as I did. BUT if anyone does know of cell based wifi service that can handle at least a 368K up speed let me know, I have many ,many applications for it.

Try to use 802.11a/g with 54 mbp using 20 fps, be sure the antenna and channels are dedicated and make sure between the two radios, you need to assigned channel with 2 guard band channel (i.e live server 1 using channel 3, then to avoid over laping, the live server 2 must use Channel 6 with 2 channel spacing to avoid interference.
